Ernst Obster
Rumors circling Osorio's trio of targets
March 31, 2008

While Juan Carlos Osorio made it seem that the three target signings are to be South American, the current rumor mill has some European flavor. To recap, Osorio's trio consists of a left-footed defender, a left midfielder, and a defensive midfielder. The latter might or might not be Lider Marmol, the Paraguayan whose MLS rights belong to the Chicago Fire. If he signs a contract with the league, the Fire would have to pass on him for Metro to acquire him.

The identity of the other two players has been clouded in mystery. But recently, two names have been making the rounds. The name of Red Bull Salzburg Juniors left winger Ernst Obster, which was first reported as a potential New York target by the Austrian press during Metro's stay in Salzburg, has resurfaced again. According to Salzburger Kronen Zeitung, Metro Technical Director Jeff Agoos has been in constant contact with Obster. The New York Post confirms the interest, saying Osorio is "definitely interested".

The Post also confirms the other potential target, Scottish defender Chris Innes. The former Gretna captain is now a free agent, after his penniless club made him "redundant".

The MLS transfer window closes April 15th.
